Utilizing the full breadth of the School of Music and Dance, numerous collaborative projects are ongoing throughout every academic year, with students frequently partnering with colleagues from composition and electronic music, opera, classical and jazz studies, dance, and string pedagogy. The UO’s Community Music Institute is a learning and teaching center for our string pedagogy program, offering lessons to children taught by experienced teachers with extensive training in both Suzuki and traditional methods. Many students major in music in any one of our many degree offerings, but students can also double major in music and other areas, minor in music, and participate in lessons and orchestra as non-majors. We encourage a diverse student experience. Many of our graduates hold positions in major symphonies as well as university faculty positions around the country. Some of our guest masterclasses have included such well known musicians as Midori, Glenn Dicterow, Karen Dreyfus, Yo-Yo Ma, David Finckel and Jeff Bradetich. The School of Music and Dance presents over 200 concerts every year including performances by our artist faculty in residence as well as many superb guest artists who present masterclasses for our students. Our students study privately with outstanding artist faculty members, perform in weekly performance classes, and participate in our robust chamber music program.
